THE CENTRE CALLS FOR A COORDINATED RESPONSE TO FAMILY VIOLENCE

The Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare today welcomed the Government’s family violence announcement, but highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to addressing the issue ahead of the release of the Royal Commission into Family Violence report next week.

“Every day Victoria’s family services, including Child FIRST and Integrated Family Services, come into contact with struggling families where violence is part of their daily existence,” CEO Deb Tsorbaris said today.

“Currently, violence is an issue for around 50 per cent of families that these services work with.

“Child FIRST, along with other family services, is a vital community asset that each year works with tens of thousands of vulnerable children and families to ensure they get the help they need.

“It plays a crucial role in the response to family violence, working alongside VicPol, the Courts and other family violence response organisations.”

Ms Tsorbaris said the Centre would welcome the opportunity to contribute to the Government’s Family Violence Steering Committee as announced by the Premier today.

“The Centre and its members look forward to the Royal Commission into Family Violence report and to continuing to work with Government to address what is a crucial issue for the entire Victorian community.”
