Cultural Awareness Training

Delivered in conjunction with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited (VACSAL), this 3.5-hour workshop is designed to help participants who work in roles in the community services sector develop the requisite knowledge and skills to effectively engage and support First Nations people and their community.
The workshop provides participants with an understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture, protocols, and engagement strategies. This interactive session provides opportunities for open discussion and will help practitioners work more effectively with Aboriginal community agencies and individuals.
About VACSAL
The Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited (VACSAL) is a state-wide agency that provides advice to the government on a range of community service issues and is a major provider of extensive community service programs to the Aboriginal community.
Learning outcomes

Greater understanding of the history and past events that shaped the way in which Aboriginal communities have evolved to adapt to today’s society;

Gain an understanding of where Aboriginal populations reside and the types of conditions that exist in Aboriginal communities, both rural and urban;

Understand the value system of Aboriginal people, grief and loss, the role of Elders and cultural beliefs and hierarchy;

Understand how racism and stereotyping of Aboriginal people impact individuals and

Develop a better understanding of how to break down barriers.
Who should attend?
Practitioners, social workers, clinicians, teachers, wellbeing counsellors and other workforce participants who are part of an integrated system.

This is an interactive 3.5-hour session that is delivered online.
To optimise the learning experience and maximise opportunities for learner participation, audience capacity is 30 participants per session.
